School Counseling

First and foremost, it is the School Counselors’ responsibility to help children get the best possible education. A good education includes not only learning to read, write, and do math, but it also includes learning good social skills. This means, among other things, learning how to get along with other children, making good decisions, controlling anger, accepting responsibility, and being aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Many of these skills are taught at home. It is the School Counselors’ intent to supplement the learning from home through small group and classroom guidance lessons. School counselors are also in the building to help students who are facing particular difficulties. Family disruptions such as an illness, death, or divorce, may affect children at school. If your family is experiencing anything out of the ordinary, please let us know. One of our major functions is to help parents.

Elementary School Counselors Can Help:  

Students with:

Becoming successful learners. Making friends. Dealing with changes in the family. Getting with others. Solving problems.

Through: Small groups Classroom guidance Individual sessions

 

Parents with…. Understanding developmental stages of young children at school and at home. Teacher conferences. Dealing with changes in the family. Linking parent and child to important services in school. Finding help through community agencies.

 

School Staff with….. Developing new educational or behavioral strategies for students. Providing training and materials on emotional, social, and academic needs of children. Parent conferences.

Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am - 3:45 pm.  Office hours follow the Onslow County School District calendar and email will only be checked during this time.
